If your nonprofit is on Salesforce, or is about to be, you have probably run into two names that get used almost interchangeably: NPSP and Nonprofit Cloud. They are not the same product, and picking the wrong starting point, or migrating at the wrong time, can mean months of extra configuration work later.
What NPSP actually is
NPSP, the Nonprofit Success Pack, is a free managed package that Salesforce.org built on top of standard Salesforce. It reshapes the generic company-and-contact structure built for sales teams into something that matches how nonprofits actually operate: households, donations, relationships, soft credits, and recurring gifts. For over a decade, NPSP has been the default starting point for nonprofits moving onto Salesforce, and a large share of nonprofit Salesforce orgs today still run on it.
What Nonprofit Cloud actually is
Nonprofit Cloud is Salesforce's newer, purpose-built platform for the sector. Instead of a package layered on top of a sales CRM, it is a unified data model built around how mission-driven organizations work: fundraising, program management, case management, and grants management, all connected instead of stitched together with separate tools.
The core difference
NPSP is fundraising and donor-relationship first. It is mature, widely supported by the Salesforce nonprofit consultant ecosystem, and a solid fit for organizations whose Salesforce use is mostly about donors, gifts, and campaigns.
Nonprofit Cloud is built for organizations that also run programs, track outcomes, manage grants, or handle case work, and want that operational data connected to fundraising in one system instead of living in a separate program-management tool.
Put simply: if your organization's Salesforce use starts and ends with donors, NPSP alone may already cover what you need. If you also manage programs, services, or grants, Nonprofit Cloud is built to bring that under the same roof.
Should you migrate from NPSP to Nonprofit Cloud
Not automatically, and not urgently for every organization. A migration tends to make sense when:
Your team manages programs, case work, or grants alongside fundraising, and wants that data in one system instead of several.
Your NPSP org has accumulated a lot of custom workarounds that a native program-management data model would simplify.
You are already planning a broader Salesforce refresh and want to build on the platform Salesforce is actively investing in going forward.
If your organization is small, fundraising-focused, and NPSP already covers what your team does day to day, there is rarely a reason to migrate just because a newer product exists. The right call comes from an honest look at what your team actually does, not a blanket recommendation either way.
What a migration actually involves
Moving from NPSP to Nonprofit Cloud is not a simple export-and-import. Data models differ, and any custom automations, reports, or integrations built on the NPSP structure need to be evaluated and, in most cases, rebuilt for the new model. A proper migration starts with an assessment of your current org before anyone sets a timeline or a budget.
New to Salesforce, or already have your Power of Us licenses?
If your organization has not applied for Salesforce yet, most nonprofits qualify for free licenses through Salesforce's Power of Us Program. We cover exactly how that program works, who qualifies, and what the application process looks like in our Power of Us Program guide.

FAQ
Is Nonprofit Cloud replacing NPSP? Salesforce continues to invest in Nonprofit Cloud as its forward-looking nonprofit platform, but NPSP remains supported and is still a valid choice for many organizations, especially fundraising-focused ones.
Can I use NPSP and Nonprofit Cloud together? Salesforce has published transition paths between the two, but they are built on different data models, so using both in the same org is not a simple toggle. A partner can help map which parts of your setup carry over.
How long does an NPSP to Nonprofit Cloud migration take? It depends on how customized your existing NPSP org is and how much data needs to move. A proper migration starts with an assessment of your current setup before any timeline is set.
Do I need Nonprofit Cloud if I only track donors? Not necessarily. If your Salesforce use is limited to donor and gift tracking, NPSP alone may already do everything you need.
